Training
Fast Start
Take the Fast Start Training Course, at home within two weeks of signing on as a leader. You can take the course online or request a video from the scout office.

New Leader Essentials
New Leader Essentials is about 90 minutes long. It's the first part of the training you'll need to become officially "Trained." It covers the BASICS of Scouting. Take it at a regularly scheduled training event - check the council newsletter for the next date.

Leader Specific Training
After you complete the "Essentials" you'll move into the training that is specific to your position, such as Den Leader, Committee Member, etc. This takes about 2 hours. Check the newsletter for the next scheduled date (usually combined with the "Essentials").

If you are in Boy Scouting, or are a Webelos Leader / Assistant Leader, then you'll need to complete your basic training with Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills, usually held over a weekend at one of our camps. Check the newsletter for next available date.

Supplemental Training Courses
Supplemental training is offered at Roundtables, Pow Wows, and additional training events as scheduled. Attend the Roundtables! That's where you get new and up to date information and ideas for your program.

Safety a Float
The Boy Scouts of America is the leader in the field of youth protection. A youth protection training course, “Youth Protection Guidelines for Adult Leaders and Parents,” is now available on the Internet for volunteers, parents, and other individuals.
Before a BSA group may engage in swimming activities of any kind, a minimum of one adult leader must complete Safe Swim Defense training, have a commitment card (No. 34243) with them, and agree to use the eight defenses in this plan.

Safe Swim Defense and Safety Afloat training can be given by any person authorized by the council, including a BSA Aquatics resource person, a unit leader with aquatics skill, or any other person with aquatics knowledge or experience whom the local council has approved. One of the best opportunities for Safe Swim Defense training is in summer camp.
Safety Afloat has been developed to promote boating and boating safety and to set standards for safe unit activity afloat. Before a BSA group may engage in an excursion, expedition, or trip on the water (canoe, raft, sailboat, motorboat, rowboat, tube, or other craft), adult leaders for such activity must complete Safety Afloat Training, No. 34159C, have a commitment card, No. 34242A, with them, and be dedicated to full compliance with all nine points of Safety Afloat. At least one person must be trained in CPR from any recognized agency for Safety Afloat.
