Training
Training is an important part of learning to become an effective leader. The scouting position you hold will be easier once you know the skills necessary to provide a quality program to today's youth.

Beginning January, 2011 all Scoutmasters will be required to have completed the requirements for Trained Status.

Beginning January, 2012, all Scoutmasters, Assistant Scoutmasters and other youth contact leaders will be required to complete the requirements for Trained Status.

May 21-22, 2011          Boy Scout Leader - Outdoor Skills

You may attend any training from any district.  Taking training is the most important, so please make every effort to complete the training. If you are going to take part in training please let them know in advance so they will have supplies for the number of trainees that will attend.

Online Training is available on many subjects.  See the Council Training Page.

"Planning and Preparing for Hazardous Weather" is required for at least one adult leader on each outdoor trip starting on January 1, 2009.  It's available online and is a worthwhile course for all leaders and anyone interested in the weather.

Every Scout deserves a trained leader! Plan your work; work your plan!
A trained leader is a prepared leader.  Many of our leaders in the Jo Daviess, Carroll, and Stephenson counties spend countless hours guiding our Scouts to bigger and better adventures. They each need to be trained!  Adults moving from one position to another need to update their training for the new position.

Let's make it our goal to have every leader trained by the end of the year.

Steps to Becoming a Trained Leader

Youth Protection

Available at training sessions or online.  This must now be taken prior to applying for all registered volunteers  and retaken every two years.

Fast Start
Take the Fast Start Training Course, at home within two weeks of signing on as a leader. You can take the course online or request a video from the Scout office.

This is Scouting
This is Scouting is the first part of the training you'll need to become officially "Trained." It covers the BASICS of Scouting. Take it at a regularly scheduled training event or online.

Leader Specific Training
After you complete the "Essentials" you'll move into the training that is specific to your position, such as Den Leader, Committee Member, etc.   Check the newsletter for the next scheduled date.

If you are in Boy Scouting, or are a Webelos Leader then you'll need to complete your basic training with Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills, usually held over a weekend at one of our camps.  Check the newsletter for next available date.

Supplemental Training Courses
Supplemental training is offered at Roundtables, Pow Wows, and additional training events as scheduled.  Attend the Roundtables!  That's where you get new and up to date information and ideas for your program.

Online training can be found at www.myscouting.org   You will need your member number to have the training entered into your training record.
